COMMUNITIES IN SCHOOLS OF THE HEART OF TEXAS provides a variety of youth and family-serving programs that are listed below:
Communities In Schools (CIS) is the nation’s largest dropout prevention program. CIS seeks to place social service professionals in schools to develop a plan and coordinate the provision of school-based social services for children with academic, attendance or behavioral issues. CIS of the Heart of Texas is an affiliate of the national program.
CIS Afterschool Program is a nationally recognized after-school program which coordinates the efforts of 30 community agencies to provide activities that support students’ emotional, social, physical, and intellectual development. Parents are offered educational opportunities such as GED, English as a Second Language (ESL), Computer Literacy, Parenting, and Citizenship Classes.
CIS AmeriCorps is a network of local, state and national service programs that connect more than 70,000 Americans each year with intensive service to meet our country’s critical needs in education, public safety, health and the environment.
CIS Tutoring is the largest literacy initiative in McLennan County with over 300 hours of tutoring and reading with public school students who have been identified as needing additional resources to promote successful learning.
CIS Workforce assists youth in the six-county Heart of Texas Workforce Development Area to prepare youth for the world of work and post-secondary training options.
CIS Healthier Communities focuses the resources and energy of the local healthcare community to insure that all children and families are immunized, receive appropriate healthcare, and are educated about health issues.
CIS Mentoring is the largest mentoring initiative that has matched over 900 adults with a child/youth in the six county Heart of Texas area. The mentoring programs matches children/youth with caring, responsible, adults who are 18 years of age. The goal of the relationship is to promote healthy relationships and successful living.
